There really is a place called Pocahontas, IL or Why Chicken should never be given tasks first thing in the morning

Our journey to the center of the earth Crap, wrong book. Let’s try this again.
Our first Family vacation to St. Loius started L.A.T.E. on a Saturday night.
Okay, technically it was a Sunday morning, but who’s telling this tale?
I may have waited until about 30 minutes prior to our departure to
pack my stuff. I mean, I was stressed. I was shoving two vacations into
one and not sure what I needed to bring. How I wanted to look.
But that is a story for another time. Today, we talk
of Pocahontas, IL, one of the last places in IL before you get to MO.
Food on the Road
I know, I know it doesn’t say Pocahontas Restaurant. I was just as
baffled as you are. Hubs actually argued with me
that it was called that. But since he had been up for nearly 27 hours
straight at this point I wasn’t going to argue with him.
We went inside the restaurant, only to discover they didn’t take VISA
and I had neglected to get money out of the bank before
we left Ohio. Of course, for our convience, there was an ATM
located inside the restaurant that we could use, at the tune
of $3.50 per transaction PLUS whatever our bank charged us.
(incase you were wondering its $1.25) Why yes I did use that ATM
because conviently the one located across the street that
only charged $2.00 per transaction was Out of Order.
But this post isn’t about the overpriced ATMs or the insane
amount of pecans that they put in Giggle’s pancakes.
(Seriously folks, I think they actually lost money with all the pecans in
there.) It isn’t even about how there were whole carrots and large
chunks of broccoli in my vegetable omelet. (Note to self-ask for
veggies bite size next time) It is about how the lovely Chicken,
who is bubbly and smiley most of the time is N.O.T. a morning person.
We go into the restaurant and she orders a glass of water,
a cup of hot cocoa and a slice of bacon. Yes, you read that right
A FREAKIN SLICE OF BACON. Of course, you can’t order a
slice, she got a side of bacon, in which she ate A SLICE.
Also she is very quiet. If you have met The Chicken you know that
this is not the norm for her. She usually will talk
your ear off. Then she will pick it up off the floor, put it back on
and talk it off again. Seriously folks. This is only true
after she has been up for about an hour. (I have no idea what time
we are going to have to get her up when school starts
being that she has to be there at 7:23 AM and I don’t want her to
murder any of her teachers) She has always been an
anti morning person. When she was a toddler I would just give
her her juice cup and stay the heck out of her way. She took
TWO naps a day until she was five. The girl loves her sleep. For realz.
After we finish breakfast hubs tells the girls that if they need to use the bathroom
to do it now because we were about 3 hours out from our friends’ house and
didn’t want to stop if we didn’t have to. The Chicken claims she is fine
and Giggles went to use the facilities.
At the car hubs gives The Chicken some drink containers to
throw in the garbage. She starts in with the moaning, and
the groaning about how she has to do everything. She doesn’t
know where the trash cans are and really, why can’t
we just do it ourselves-we should really be responsible for the
stuff we bring into the van.
Now at this point I have to give credit to hubs, he normally doesn’t
have the patience for morning Chicken, as he isn’t
all roses & sunshine himself. But he looks at her and says
very calmly “Look around there is a trash can around here
somewhere. Take your time and just DO IT. Don’t make me ask again.”
At this point The Chicken loses her shit. She starts bawling and
crying that there isn’t a trash can all around and why are we being so
mean and hurtful towards her. This is the WORST vacation
ever and she wants to go home.
Note, she has not moved, nor looked around to find a trash can.
Hubby tells her to look for the trash, there is a restaurant, a hotel,
AND a gas station all in the same parking lot. There IS a trash can and she
needs to find it. He may or may not have mentioned that she could walk the rest

of the way to St.Louis if she didn’t bother to find it.

She walks around the car that is parked in front of us
and starts flailling her arms up and down.
“I CAN’T FIND IT! WHY ARE YOU DOING
THIS TO ME? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?”
I am so tired, I really want to just take the damn trash from her
and throw it away in the trash can I plainly see at
this point, but I don’t want the hubs ticked at me for the rest of
the journey so I just laugh. And Laugh A.LOT.

I may have been concerned with wetting my pants I was laughing so hard

Her sister finally rolls out of the bathroom and asks what is wrong
with The Chicken. I think it was at that point
The Chicken found the trash can and climbed back into
the van as if nothing had happened.
I am still laughing-I think it is the tiredness that kept me laughing,
because I am still not sure it was THAT funny.
After the laughter dies down and the Chicken isn’t all peeved
with us, she mentions that she should get a
reward for her trash hauling duties. An American Girl Doll.

Leaving the Bright Lights & Big City to Play Amish

First let me start off by telling you that I am not a deadbeat, my problem is
I only have half a brain. And its not the good half, its the “I would
probably forget the rest of my brain if it wasn’t attached to my head half.”
As you all know I left on July 19th for a fantastic vacation. We drove
straight through Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and part of Missouri
to get to our friends’ house. We had an excellent time.
I took a bus (not recommended) from St. Louis to Chicago so I could
spend 36 hours of fun with 1400 of my closest friends to have my
husband loose a grip when coming to pick me up. It was great with a terrible
crash at the end with hubs, but that is a story for another day.
We drove straight through Illinois, Indiana and Ohio to get home at 4:00
in the morning on Saturday to find a nice letter from the electric company
on our door. It started out with the words “Attention Occupant”
Let me tell you that when letters are started
out with “Attention Occupant” things are never good.
Who knew when you didn’t pay the electric bill because they had signed
you up for some crazed program that sends your electric bill to your junk
mail folder that they might get snippy and cut off your electric not caring
that no one is home and you have a freezer full of meat. And because
all of this craziness happened on a Saturday we had to wait until Monday
to get our power turned back on. Even though I paid them on Saturday.
All’s I can say is thank goodness for awesome neighbors and 5 day
coolers and mom’s who make you roast beef in a crock pot so you have
a hot meal that doesn’t include a drive thru.
So while you all have been doing this or that, our family has been busy
playing Amish for the past 3 days and well, if I was ever unsure of whether
or not I would cut it as an Amish person I can say with utmost confidence.
I. WOULD. NOT.
So, while I would love to tell you the glory of our vacation, the screw up with
my business cards, the awesomeness of slightly attending BlogHer, or the awesome
giveaway I should have posted aboutalready; I can’t. I have to attend to
the laundryand refill the now cleaned out fridge and freezer.
I guess there is an upside to this, my appliances are now
show room fresh, just don’t sniff to deeply.

At BlogHer

sadly the week has been without internet access. I will explain all about it later. But for now I am in Chicago enjoying the sites and people watching. Hoping to meet lots of you! Will you be there?

Preparing for BlogHer

So per usual I have been great out getting others cards designed
for them, but cards for myself…..not so much. I realized in a panic
last night that I might not have “real” business cards for yet another
conference (were you on the receiving end of one of the ‘cards’
I handed out at Blissdom? Then you can attest to the fact that
they were not up to par) So freaking out, I contacted my
person over at Uprinting (who is actually sponsoring
my blog for a bit & could sponsor yours too!) As long as I get the
order in today and make sure that I change the in house production
time & pay a bit more for the rush I will have my cards by
Wednesday. I am beyond excited about that.
Now you are thinking, “Heather you are just saying all of this because
they are sponsoring your blog.” To be honest, I have recommended
Uprinting to many people when ordering. When I designed the
Summer Camp brochures for Choristers I had them use Uprinting.
When I got my business cards done for Heather Durdil
Photography, I used Uprinting. I am going to be using Uprinting to
get some canvas prints done here really soon (So stay on the look
out next week as you will have a chance to win a 16×20 wrapped
Canvas here…woot!) So whether or not they sponsored me I would
recommend them. They have great customer service & I LOVE
that you can proof it before it goes into production.
Now if you’ll excuse me I need to get this baby going into
production so I can hand them out to YOU at BlogHer next week!

You Capture-Shapes

I am so excited that I actually remembered to do a You Capture this week. Well,
I did forget, but before I left for downtown Cleveland this afternoon I saw that
the theme was shapes and knew I could get some great shots downtown.
There are quite a bit more photos in this post than I normally put up,
so please be patient as it may take a few more seconds to load than normal.
Squares inside more squares
You Capture-Shapes
Loved this piece of Art hanging in a building.
So many rectangles and curves.
You Capture-Shapes
This is the same sculpture from above, just another
angle. Just look at the circle & line detail you get now.
You Capture-Shapes
I love the curves (I know not really a shape)
with all the rectangles and triangles.
You Capture-Shapes
The Key Tower. From a distance it looks like
it is made from legos. Chicken always called
it the ‘Pencil Building’ when she was little.
You Capture-Shapes
Looking at a building on East 9th Street.
I love all the squres and reflections of other squares.
You Capture-Shapes
And lastly, outside The Jake. You get the
circles from the lights of the field and the
stars and rectangles on the flag. I think
this might be my favorite photo from the day.

Tragedy instead of Vloggling

Today was going to be me showing off my first vlog that documented the trip to NY and back.
Instead tragedy struck and I am now searching for a loved one.  Please help if you can.

On My Way

Last weekend was busy with getting my mom’s house and her
mind ready for her reception/open house.
Family and friends came from all over to celebrate
Mom & Carl’s new life together. I never expected to have my children
whisked away on Sunday by my Aunt & Uncle.
Is it sad to say that I really didn’t miss them? In all fairness in the summer
they keep pretty busy and are hardly home. So with them not around I was
able to host a yard sale and clean out The Chicken’s closet-which really needed it.
But now I am on the road, driving five hours through the rain to
see these happy faces and that makes my heart glad!
cousins
P.S. Have you ever tried to photograph ten kids
together with half a dozen adults trying to
instruct the children how to pose?
Its about as fun as it sounds.

Works for Me Wednesday-The Frugal Room Re-do

This is my first week playing along with Works for me Wednesday hosted by We are that Family.
When thinking about redoing a room on a budget, don’t bealarmed-you can do it. You may think it will be borning
and bland, but seriouslyyou don’t have to spend a lot to get a room with a lot of pizazz!
Chicken's New Room

(Photo above) Wall color was picked out from the Oops shelf at Home Depot. We got a gallon of Glidden scrubbable paint for $5! The comforter set (which is actually for a double bed) I got brand new at a yard sale for only $10. The shiny curtain of circles above her head board is actually 2 sets of door curtains that I got at the dollar spot in Target. They are push pinned to her walls with Clear push pins. Her name above the curtain of beads cost us $5 and the paint to cover it up (which was about $20 for all the Sweet Pea Spray paint for the room to make all the furniture match) A lot of the baskets and bins that we used in the room we got on clearance at Target here and there. Many of them are repurposed Easter Baskets-which totally works for me. The wall decals are from the Dollar Tree, for a mere $5 in wall decals we did the room up right. The memory board was also a steal at a yard sale for less than $1. The curtains came from the Clearance bin at Target-I think they were about $3 each. The curtain rods came from Walmart for $4 each on Clearance. The furniture was a hodge podge of stuff we had around the house. A bit of spray paint and she has a customized look for her room, which she loves.

Chicken's New Room
Her dressers, bookshelf and her reading bean bag chair-that she got for her bday this year.
Chicken's New Room
Custom signs made by the Chicken-she cracked me up with the “No Smoking” one.
Chicken's New Room
Her closet neat & tidy. The vent that started the pinkness in her room and her $1 trash
can from Target, which I really should have emptied before I took the photos.
Chicken's New Room

An old T.V. stand my neighbor was tossing out, painted & repurposed for her
Webkinz, beanie baby and Care Bear collection. Tool box made for free
at Home Depot on their Saturday kids projects. Bird house above bed
also one of the featured projects another month. She loves going.
Total cost of Room Redo for The Chicken $60. Def works for Me!

Happy 4th of July

4thofjuly
I am wishing all of my friends a happy & healthy 4th of July, no matter
where you happen to be in the world.  I know that some of you won’t be celebrating
with fireworks and bbq’s but I know that your day will probably be just a little bit
sunnier knowing that I am wishing you a happy and pleasant Saturday in July.
